The 2008 Jeanneau Prestige 42s is a hard-top sports yacht that has achieved enormous commercial success, combining the elegance of living spaces typical of French boats with radical technical innovation for its time. Designed by Vittorio Garroni for the design and based on a hull signed by American architect Michael Peters, it stands out clearly depending on whether you look at it in the marina or helm it in the water.
The Image: Aesthetics, Space and Lifestyle
From a visual and layout point of view, the Prestige 42s expresses a concept of sports luxury, modern and strongly focused on conviviality.
Fluid external lines: Unlike the flybridge version, the "S" (Sport) version eliminates the upper appendages, giving a much more streamlined, light and sleek profile.
Total "Open" effect: The true heart of this boat's image is the rigid Hard Top that can be opened electrically. In a few seconds, it transforms the covered square into an open-air salon. The presence (in many models) of a rear glass door with electric glass allows perfect isolation of the environment in the cold months or total opening towards the sea in summer.
A perception of a "large boat": Despite being a 42-foot boat (around 13 metres), the external and internal spaces are optimised to give the sensation of being on a 45-50 foot yacht. The aft deck features a large sunbathing area positioned above a hydraulic garage for the tender (a rare and highly prized feature for this category).
• Premium interior layout: Below deck, the 2-cabin and 2-bathroom arrangement offers surprising volumes, with a master cabin forward and a guest cabin aft with an unexpected headroom. The glossy cherry wood finishes reflect the standard of the great shipyards of the late 2000s.
🌊 Behaviour at Sea: Performance and Propulsion
The 2008 Prestige 42s was one of the first models in its class to be specifically designed around the Volvo Penta IPS 500 propulsion system (2 diesel engines, each 370 hp). This detail drastically influences its dynamic behaviour:
• Millimetric manoeuvrability (The Joystick): Mooring in port becomes child's play. Thanks to the electronics of the azimuthal IPS pods, the boat can translate laterally ("go sideways") or rotate on itself simply by moving the joystick with two fingers.
• Sporty acceleration and pick-up: Thanks to the forward-facing propellers (which work in clean, non-turbulent water), efficiency is maximised. The boat gets on plane quickly (in about 7.6 seconds) and reaches a top speed of around 35 knots. The thrust is similar to that of a lightweight sports boat, with a transition from 3 to 30 knots in about 10 seconds.
• Cruising speed and efficiency: The ideal regime is between 2,800 and 3,000 rpm, where the boat maintains a comfortable cruising speed of 25-26 knots. Overall consumption is decidedly optimised compared to traditional shaft drives (around 90 litres/hour total), offering excellent autonomy.
• Comfort and soundproofing: On board, vibrations are reduced to a minimum and the noise level is extremely low, especially when navigating with the rear windshield closed, as the engines are located under the aft sunbathing area. The yacht maintains a very dry navigation, deflecting sprays well.
• The weak point (Head sea): Although Michael Peters' hull is excellent, historical tests and feedback from commanders highlight that with formed sea and short bow wave (about 1 metre), the yacht tends to "bounce" on the waves and sometimes land flat rather than cutting through the water smoothly. This behaviour improves significantly by keeping the forward water tanks full to weigh down the front section. In tight turns at constant speed, it tends to have a rather wide turning radius, which requires adjusting the engine revs to be closed with decision.
