Notes

Main deck

  • ⛵ The Deck: Space, Cleanliness and Safety
  • The deck of the Dufour 485 is dominated by clean lines, wide open spaces and a well-designed cockpit:
  • • The Cockpit: It is spacious and designed for maximum comfort. In the centre, it features a large table with folding leaves. The entire aft area behind the helms offers a very generous walking surface (about 2.50 x 1.20 metres) that conceals three large lockers for storage.
  • • Twin Wheel Steering: The presence of two steering columns leaves the central passage to the aft area clear. The position of the coamings allows the helmsman to sit comfortably and safely, ensuring excellent visibility of the sails.
  • • Side Decks and Maneuvering: The side decks are very wide (over 70 centimetres) and covered in teak. The deck is completely clear of obstacles and tripping hazards, as the genoa rails are positioned against the coachroof and all the running rigging from the mast
  • • Safety: The toerails and bulwarks are slightly higher than standard to provide greater protection during movements on board.

Lower deck

  • 🛏️ The Interiors: Brightness and Comfort of a "Grand Large"
  • Below deck, the interior is warm, welcoming and dominated by high-quality wood finishes (Moabi essence) with coordinated upholstery. The most common and balanced configuration on the used market is the one with 3 cabins and 3 bathrooms.
  • • The Dinette (Saloon): It is extremely bright thanks to the generous side windows on the deck and the hull portholes that offer abundant natural light. It features a large central dining table surrounded by a comfortable "U"-shaped sofa on the left and a second linear sofa on the right wall
  • • The Kitchen: Located on the left hull side, it is spacious and super equipped for long navigations. It features large Corian worktops, a double stainless steel sink, a 3-burner folding kitchen with oven, dedicated storage for dishes and a generous refrigeration capacity (only
  • • The Chart Area: Located on the starboard side, opposite the kitchen, it features a dedicated seat and a spacious chart table facing the hull side, with electrical panels and storage for all navigation instruments.
  • • The Owner's Cabin (Bow): It is the true strong point of the interiors. It offers a peninsula double bed (accessible from both sides), exceptional internal heights and a notable storage capacity with double-door wardrobes, shelves and lateral cabinets. It also features a private "en-suite" bathroom with
  • • The Guest Cabins (Stern): They are two twin cabins with comfortable double beds and wardrobes. Each has access to its own bathroom (the starboard one is generally larger and also serves as a day bathroom with double access from the corridor).

Description

The 2008 Dufour 485 Grand Large, designed by the renowned Italian studio Umberto Felci together with Patrick Roséo for the French shipyard, represents one of the most successful and iconic models of the golden age of the Grand Large range. This vessel is certified in Class CE A (Ocean), specifically designed for long offshore cruises, combining generous volumes with excellent nautical performance.

Quality of Construction

The construction of the Dufour 485 reflects the solid tradition of the transalpine shipyards combined with modern lamination technologies:

• Hull and Deck: The hull is made of monolithic fibreglass (full stratification) below the waterline to ensure maximum structural strength and impact resistance. The deck and emerged areas of the hull, on the other hand, exploit the sandwich technique with a balsa or infusion-moulded core, a solution that lightens the structure in the high points, lowers the centre of gravity and offers excellent thermal and acoustic insulation inside.

• Hull-Deck Liaison: The junction between the hull and deck is structured with a mechanically bonded and bolted "livet diritto" system, topped by a solid wooden (or aluminium) fanga rail that guarantees perfect watertightness and torsional rigidity to the stresses of the open sea.

• Appendages and Ballast: The bulb is paired with a fin that, depending on the version, offers a standard draft of 1.90 metres or a deep version of 2.25 metres. The ballast uses stainless steel reinforcement plates inside the hull.

• Interiors and Woodwork: The 2008 interiors are distinguished by the abundant use of solid wood and traditional finishes (often in warm and dark tones typical of the period), preferred to plastic laminates now more widespread. The woodwork is robust and designed to last over time, with handholds strategically positioned for safe descent even in rough seas.

Qualità Veliche e Comportamento in Mare

Despite the impressive maximum draft of 4.70 metres and a significant displacement of around 15 tonnes, Umberto Felci has managed to design an incredibly agile hull:

• Wave passage and stability: The hull shape features a wide stern that remains high in the water, reducing hydrodynamic resistance in port tack. The boat demonstrates a smooth and safe passage over the waves, without suffering from hard structural impacts ("slamming"), maintaining excellent course stability.

• Sail area and performance: The rig is 9/10 fractional. With a total sail area of around 113 m² (divided between a 54 m² mainsail and a generous 140% genoa of around 59 m²), the Dufour 485 is able to exploit even the lightest Mediterranean breezes. In moderate winds, it maintains constant averages of 7-8 knots under sail.
